Conferences
California-Nevada Section Conferences are held twice each year—in
the spring and fall. Typically, the location of the conference rotates
between northern and southern California sites with occasional opportunities
to hold conferences in northern and southern Nevada. Reno and Las
Vegas are by far the most popular Nevada locations. See the Conference
History for more information on historical conference locations.
The fall conference is usually the more heavily attended of the
two and is the time when full conference exhibits are included in
the program. At the fall 2006 conference, over 175 exhibitors displayed
their wares. The fall conference occurs over three full days with
a fourth day for committee meetings and a fifth day devoted to workshops. The most important part of any conference is the technical
program. The technical program is the reason why most people attend,
because it gives them an opportunity to get the latest updates on
water technology in the US. Hundreds of papers are presented in
technical sessions and workshops. At the fall conference there can
be as many as 10 parallel sessions covering topics from financial
management to water treatment of the latest chemical or microbe.
The fall conference program is usually kicked off with a full day
of committee and division meetings. Other fall activities include:
awards ceremony, keynote luncheon, annual dinner (or other fun event),
technical tours, certification exams, young professional mixer,
university forum, small system activities, Section annual business
meeting and the golf tournament.
The spring conference is also about three days long with a fourth
day devoted to committee and division meetings as the first order
of business during the conference week. Exhibits are the “table
top” variety which makes it easier to fit a lot of exhibits in a
smaller space. In Las Vegas during the spring 2007 conference, there
were nine parallel sessions! Conference events include: keynote
luncheon, dinner, technical tours, certification exams, young professional
mixer, university forum, and the golf tournament. The big
events of the spring conference are the operator competitions: pipe
tapping contest, Top Ops, meter madness and Hot Flare competition.
