Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) Exam Grading
Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification exams are now graded at the office rather than onsite during the exam. The target is to send certification documentation for those that pass within two weeks. All candidates are given the free retake paperwork to expedite processing their next exam request if needed.

Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) Certification Exam Operating Procedures With COVID-19 Disinfection Considerations
The CA-NV AWWA Certification Board approved new procedures to restart BPAT certification exams. The procedures address responsibilities shared by the host facility operators, the education service providers, CA-NV AWWA employees and volunteers and the candidates taking the exam. The first pilot BPAT certification exam will be held in Sunnyvale, CA on Saturday, May 16, 2020. Lessons learned will feed into any updates to the procedures shown below.

Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) Certification Extension
The CA-NV AWWA Certification Committee unanimously approved an extension for BPAT certificants due to continued COVID-19 constraints no business operations. The fundamental elements of the planned extension are noted below.
- New extension provided for BPAT certificants with cycles ending 3/13/20 to 6/30/20 extended to 9/30/20 IF
a. Certificant submits a completed exam application with a form of payment
b. Certificant completes the full BPAT certification exam within the extension period ending 9/30/20
c. Certificant may complete the exam within three months of the extension period ending, if the extension period ends before 9/30/20
d. Certification status remains based upon the original 3 year cycle regardless of when the exam is successfully completed
- Extension decision is in line with other industry responses to the current business environment

Emergency Certification Extension For All Programs
Due to unavoidable environmental constraints brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, CA-NV AWWA cancelled all certification exams from March 16, 2020 through April 30, 2020. At the same time, all certificants with renewal dates coming due during that window of time were automatically extended to June 30, 2020. The rationale for the emergency extension was two fold.
- Permit those with continuing education requirements to earn the hours they may have counted on receiving during the cancelled Annual Spring Conference
- Permit those needing to take the Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification exam to renew their certification status to postpone their exam to a date in May or June 2020
- All certification cycles (2 or 3 year) remain the same, regardless of when the renewal requirements are completed within the March 16 to April 30, 2020 timeframe
