Bill Harper provided written Miscellaneous Report for 2001 Conference. (a) Mr.
Harper noted NSF 61 portion remains tied up in the water works standard. (b) Some
movement, for a standard, in the California Dept of Heath but very unlikely it will be out
in 2003 or later. Agencies can specify local specifications. NSF 61 is approved in approx. 30 states. (c) Bill
Harper noted your organization can specify the use of NSF 61, on their projects, but they
cannot state that the State requires its use. (d)
Coal tar enamel remains usable in California. A new director / person is in charge.
Testing will not be complete until at least mid 2002. A sample may be tested this year. (e) AWWA D102 Standard for coating steel
tanks. Chair has submitted results of last committee meeting, however, Regulators are
unsure if this will go forward. (f) Zinc remains a heavy metal in Michigan and in
California. Attempt to get Zinc removed as a heavy metal has failed. This meaning that
workers safety / environmental issues remain in effect. VOC limits in California remain as
before Effective July 2002 VOC drops to 250 g/L may cause some problems using favorite
coating. (g) National may propose a reduction in VOC limits beyond those in effect. If
standard lowered to 100 g/L this will require use of solid materials.
