The California-Nevada American Water Works Association has a great opportunity for an Executive Director to join our incredible team in the California/Nevada Region. Working as the Leader of the Section team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to lead, educate and serve the water community to provide effective solutions and ensure public health. 
In this role, you will be responsible for the oversight and management of the CA-NV Section of AWWA (“Section”) operations. The duties of the position include: development of annual business plans and budgets, day-to-day operation and management of the Section, organizational development, supervision of staff members and contractors, membership outreach and support, developing and implementing water sector educational programs, contract negotiations, developing and managing Section policies, budgeting and financial reporting, planning, promoting and executing events, managing communications (social media, print and electronic), fundraising/sponsorships, governmental affairs and legislative advocacy, complete and timely Board deliverables, and other initiatives related to the water sector. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors (Board) Chair; serves as Board Secretary and interacts frequently with a 7-member Executive Committee and other members of the large (>20) Board. 

There are five key components to the position which will specifically include the following responsibilities: 
Section Management

  • Develop strategies and an annual implementation plan for the structure, organization, direction, and improvement of policies, processes and services of the Section.
  • Prepare and manage operational budgets, forecast expenditure analysis, and plan effective strategies for the financial well-being of the Section in collaboration with the Section Treasurer.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with existing and prospective utility members, vendors, consultants, academics, regulators, other associations and stakeholders. 
  • Oversee membership recruitment and retention plans to promote and increase membership numbers and engagement.
  • Increase non-dues revenue by managing initiatives such as special projects, education, professional credentialing, grant funding, special events, securing sponsorships. 

Training & Education 

  • Work with relevant volunteer committees and subject matter experts to effectively identify skills, knowledge, and curriculum needs; develop an education calendar, agendas and program materials to address training needs. 
  • Plan, develop and implement effective credit-based training opportunities for membership using various delivery modes including, but not limited to conferences, meetings, workshops, seminars, events, symposiums, webinars, and hosted on-line platforms.
  • Maintain accreditation with International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). 

Policy Advocacy

  • Have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of legislative and regulatory processes related to the interests of the water sector, as well as strong relationships with key policy makers.
  • Work with the Government Affairs committee and other relevant Section committees to represent the Section’s water sector before California, Nevada and federal governments. 


  • Collaborate with the Board to develop effective methods of disseminating information to the membership and to showcase the Section’s events and ongoing activities through social media strategies.
  • Oversee the creation of promotional materials, marketing collateral and advertising.
  • Write member communications, speeches, press releases and fact sheets. 

Fundraising & Event Planning

  • Develop an annual business plan for activities, events, fundraising, and meeting goals, including the identification of individual and corporate sponsors, cultivating and maintaining relationships and conducting outreach.
  • Provide leadership and overall strategic development, event oversight, and support for the Section’s events and activities such as annual conferences and exhibits, education seminars/symposia.
  • Work with the Philanthropy Council or related committees on oversight for fundraising initiatives, including event evaluations, budgets, and financial reports. 

The ideal candidate will have experience in non-profit management or trade association work and proven familiarity with matters relating to the water sector as well as CA and NV rules and regulations. The candidate must demonstrate an informed passion for the Section’s mission while maintaining a nonpartisan, patient and tactical approach. 
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required. Preferred area(s) of study: business administration, education, environmental science, engineering, public policy, marketing, or related field. Experience: Minimum 8 years of experience in association or non-profit management (including board service), educational program implementation, and policy advocacy, ideally related to the water sector. Either educational or on-the-job knowledge of environmental sciences, water utility operations, and/or water operator certifications. Positive, collaborative and adaptive leadership style. At least 5 years of supervisory experience, preferably as a manager (i.e., second line supervisor).   Strong experience in volunteer recruitment and engagement. Proven supervisory, leadership and team building skills. Excellent verbal, written and communication skills. Ability to successfully leverage relationships and negotiate agreements. Ability to manage multiple priorities and frequently changing deadlines with ease and adaptability. Ability to meet CA-NV AWWA’s standards of excellence, professionalism and integrity. Ability to travel (20%). An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which a comparable knowledge and abilities can be considered. 
Key Competencies 
This individual must execute the strategy needed to achieve that vision by inspiring and motivating board 
and staff teams. Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations, and of state, federal and community organizations. Strong communication skills and experience in presenting policy positions to policy-makers and public.  Ability to adapt to changing Board and Chair annually, while still implementing action plans, making decisions and setting priorities. Experience communicating and working in an environment with a membership-elected Board. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors, Board members, the membership at large, state agencies and elected officials from local, state, and federal governments. Exceptional analytical skills with demonstrated skills in critical thinking, attention to detail, problem-solving, and ability to manage changing priorities. Proficiency in using MS Office Suite applications, social media platforms, content management websites, graphic design applications. 
Salary: $94,300 -- $144,000 
Medical, dental, vision, employer paid life insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, 10 paid holidays annually, 3 days paid sick leave, PLUS a generous vacation package which includes 2 weeks paid vacation annually for the first 1-3 years of employment.
