Potable Water System Hydraulics-WS

Member $195 / Non-member $295

Description:
The workshop will present the essentials of potable water system hydraulics from hydrology to distribution pipe laterals.  The topics will include details of hydraulic energy.  Describe the interaction and relationship between kinetic and potential energies.  The conservation of energy, the 1st of laws of thermodynamics: transformation between forms of energy.  The 2nd law of thermodynamics: entropy and irrecoverable friction energy.  Capturing, controlling and storing precipitation, and runoff.  Managing storage of potable water: reservoirs, aquifers and tanks.  The application of the core surface water hydraulic parameters; velocity, flow, cross sectional area, mass, acceleration (gravity), force, momentum, pressure, viscosity, specific gravity, density, Reynolds's number, hydraulic residence or contact time.  Describe the fundamental hydraulic equations and there use: Bernoulli, Continuity, Manning and Darcy.  Illustrate calculations for major and minor frictional energy losses, and the practical implications to water systems.  Detail the empirical friction loss equations utilized by water utilities: Hazen-Williams and Darcy-Weisbach.  Describe electrical pump operations in concert with total dynamic head.  Pump mechanics:  efficiency, power, speed, NEMA motor sizes (horse power) and torque.  Describe the water turbines for generating electricity.  Present aquifer characteristics and the extraction of ground water:  Dupuit & Thiem equiations.  Discuss and illustrate the use of the groundwater hydraulic parameters:  porosity, medium (clay-sand), conductivity (K), piezo metric head, depth or height of aquifer, hydraulic gradient, transmissivity, drawdown, specific capacity, safe yield, overdraft, etc.  Describe and detail aqueducts open channel flow characteristics and control enlisting the Manning's equation.
