CA-NV AWWA Water Education Seminar (WES)
brings together operators, managers, technicians and field personnel for a day of educational sessions. The Seminars present a variety of topics related to system optimization, treatment, regulations, distribution, water systems, and water loss and efficiency.

May 19, 2020 - The California-Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association (CA-NV AWWA) will hold a virtual event in place of its Annual Water Education Seminar (WES) originally scheduled for August 19 at Santiago College in Orange, CA. The WES typically attracts over 600 attendees, with technical presentations focused on water and wastewater system operators.

Given the number of still-unknown factors related to the containment of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), and the potential that social distancing limitations may continue to restrict large group gatherings through the summer, the CA-NV AWWA Section’s Executive Committee concluded that cancelling this face-to-face training event was the safe and responsible action. “The health and safety of our members and staff is our highest priority” said Sue Mosburg, Executive Director. Staff is continuing to monitor daily updates from health officials along with federal, state and local governments and has taken steps to ensure in person classes, scheduled in June and beyond, are conducted with attention to personal safety, social distancing, and disinfection of facilities.

“This was a very difficult decision, but after a rigorous analysis of the coronavirus situation and ongoing discussions, we determined that hosting a virtual event is the best way to be true to our mission and keep our members safe," CA-NV AWWA Chair Andrew DeGraca shared. "This new virtual setup will assure that critical water knowledge and innovative technologies are still shared. We’re excited to collaborate with all our volunteers and members to make this happen.”

Shifting gears, we are now fully immersed in creating a dynamic virtual training experience. According to long-time Section volunteer and current Education Committee Chair Uzi Daniel, “Virtual attendees can expect the same great content that we were primed to deliver in person, with multiple topics to choose from and contact hours available for all attendees. Planning is underway to structure this new WES experience to allow attendees maximum schedule and budget flexibility – come for a single hour, move between topical training tracks that fill the morning or afternoon, or stay the entire day.” More information and registration details will provided via email and online at ca-nv-awwa.org in the days ahead.
